Making a positive difference in the lives of children and young people by supporting them to develop and maintain meaningful connections, and thrive at home and in the community.

The Case Work Support Scheme (CSS) Program, is a model developed by the Department of Communities and Justice to contract agencies to support children and young people through a variety of different services including Supported Family Time, Respite, Mentoring, In-Home Support and Transport.

At Big Brown House, this support can be provided to the children or young people we support in Out of Home Care or supporting other families in need of support.

Supported Family Time

Our Supported Family Time program assists children to enjoy a pleasant visit with family members. Our Therapeutic Support Workers (TSW’s) aim to provide a safe and nurturing environment for families to visit each other while ensuring the safety of the children and young people.

Our Supported Family Time provides:

  • A tailored program to encourage positive family interaction and help children develop stronger connections with identity and culture

  • Assists parents in developing skills and building positive relationships with their children.

  • Visits in a variety of family-friendly locations, within the community or our safe and family centred contact rooms.

  • Support at short notice or regular scheduled dates.

  • Trained and supported staff.

  • Prompt and detailed reports, recognised as a high standard by the Family Court.

  • Highest health and safety standards, in line with all Federal and State Government regulations.

  • Supports restorations.

Our TSW’s can also host approved supported family time with family members online (using their own technology) at home. We also offer the option of providing technology, within one of our supported family time rooms, where there is no access otherwise.

Respite or Short Term Care - Complex Needs

Big Brown House recognises the pressures and demands on carer/foster families. Respite can be beneficial in promoting placement stability while also allowing the child or young person to gain social connections and experiences.

At Big Brown House, we can provide a variety of flexible respite options for children and young people with complex needs, to assist parents and carers and to maintain family connections.

Big Brown House is registered with the Office of the Children Guardian's to provide care to a child or young person away from their usual home.

Respite care is for short, usually pre-planned periods of time. Respite carers might care for a child one weekend a month or for a few weeks during school holidays, providing the child and family time to rest and recharge. Respite carers provide a ‘normal everyday life’, where the child or young person can attend school, participate in sport, hobbies, friendship groups and appointments in a safe and caring environment.

Our respite service includes:

  • Day-time respite, overnight respite in our respite homes or in accommodation of your choosing.

  • At BBH you will receive a respite plan to be filled out by your services to ensure that your child is receiving the care that is most informed and in-line with their current needs. Following this they will receive life story work completed by their care team from their time with Big Brown House.

  • Big Brown House offers transport to and from the respite locations and can provide appropriate car restraints for any age child, and these are fitted correctly as per the relevant legislation and standards.

  • Big Brown House is also able to support emergency respite care where required.

Mentoring

Our tailored Youth Mentoring Program provides an opportunity for young people to spend time with a positive role model who will help them build skills and resilience through an individualised plan and activities. Within our mentoring service, we create a goal driven experience for children and young people to assist them for future endeavours.

Our mentoring program is tailored to each child and young person meaning their individual plan is purposeful and targeted towards their individual goals and needs. The children and young people can connect with a mentor who is right for them from our sizeable pool of mentors with a variety of interests, backgrounds, and skills.

At Big Brown House, we prioritise being child-focused by providing each child with a consistent mentor or mentors and a goal-setting form to support continuous progress. When a child achieves a goal, they will be awarded a certificate to celebrate their accomplishment.

For our on-going/short/long-term mentoring children and young people, you will receive monthly mentoring report updates from our teams.

We provide a range of development in:

  • Healthy and active lifestyle

  • Nutrition and cooking

In Home Support

At Big Brown House we recognise the pressures that come with balancing household responsibilities and supporting children and young people within care.

Our In-Home Support service provides dedicated assistance to caregivers and parents who require support managing various tasks around the home, particularly those involving the care of children and/or young people.

Our service aims to reduce placement breakdowns and provide a form of early intervention care to foster carers, parents and their children and young people.

In-home support works towards identifying areas of support and goals alongside our families, children and young people, and case managing agencies. This service can also provide a much needed break for our families/and or carers from their caring roles.
